Truck Driving Jobs and the Recession

CDL training schools are presently seeing an increase in student enrollment, as high as thirty percent. Are there enough truck driving jobs to accommodate them? Can a CDL student or recent CDL graduate find a trucking job in the present economic situation?
Allen will be discussing this important issue, tomorrow evening ( Tuesday, April 7th, 2009) at 7 PM Eastern Standard Time, on Blog Talk Radio’s: Truth About Trucking “LIVE.”

Women in Trucking can Make a Difference

One of the most courageous woman truckers right now is writing on the AskTheTrucker blog, exposing the treatment and tactics allowed to continue within the trucking industry, as viewed through her eyes and own experiences. The purpose for these posts are two fold:
1) To warn women desiring to get into OTR trucking about the many “red flags they must be aware of so they may avoid them.
2) To encourage other woman in trucking to speak up and not be intimidated or fearful of “losing their job.”
Desiree has a written a Journal type posting which I encourage women to read. She posts regularly, and in my opinion it’s like getting a treasure of info, which I’m sure many would be more than glad to “pay for”" if it was available in book form.
Her experiences start all the way from day 1 in truck driving school, where she first began in her quest for the coveted CDL license. It then continues into driver training and team driving. This persistant woman would not allow ANYTHING to prevent her from attaining her #1 goal of driving the big rigs. Her experiences are at times like something you would read in a novel or watch at the movie theatre.
She is a testimony of integrity, commitment, and perseverance.
If you are anyone interested in a trucking career, looking into truck driver training, are already a truck driver, or just interested in knowing what is still allowed to go on within the trucking industry, then I believe you will benefit from these journaled blog posts.

Class A CDL Driver Qualifications

I receive messages from students, new CDL holders and recent truck driving school graduates telling me that they now have their CDL Class A license, but nobody will hire them. Normally, it is because of some “little” thing in their past or on their “record” that is preventing them from being hireable. They simply did not know or understand that certain “little” things can stop an employer from bringing you on as an OTR driver.
Most all trucking companies go by the same set of rules when hiring a new driver. Many policies are set forth by local, state and federal law. Many other policies are those set by the company itself. Had any of these students or recent grads had known about these policies, they could have saved thousands of dollars they spent for the truck driving school, realizing that they would not be able to get hired in the first place.
If you are considering a career in trucking and have no driving experience and are planning to attend a truck driving school for training, first make sure there is nothing that will prevent you from being hired by an employer. Should there be something, you will have just wasted a large amount of money for a CDL that you may never be able to use.
There are four areas that you would want to verify to insure all is well: Minimum Qualifications, Safety Issues, Documents and Criminal History. Many truck driving schools will see a questionable item and tell you that you should be alright, but remember……..they want your $4000 payment, or whatever their training price may be!
Download and print out these Class A CDL Driver Qualifications and keep for a reference guide. If there is something that may prevent you from obtaining employment as a driver, you would want to get it resolved, if possible, BEFORE shelling out the $$$ for a truck driving school.
