Truck Driver Loses Job as Child Dies
Posted by Allen Smith in Truck Driving Jobs, otr trucking, trucking, trucking companies on July 14th, 2009
Truck driver, Andre Walls had been trucking over the road for two and a half years. He had never had an accident and had never received a ticket. Two and a half years of perfect driving and being an excellent employee. Then, he was terminated by his company for violating a company policy : having an “unauthorized passenger” in the truck with him. The company reported it to his DAC Report and just like that . . . Mr. Walls found himself out of the job he loved and now, cannot find another employer to hire him.
Yes, he made a mistake by allowing an unathorized passenger to ride in the truck with him . . . but here’s the rest of the story:
Andre had been running hard all week with very little rest in order to make extra money for himself and his family. He was taking every run he could so they could get “back on track” with their finances. He was dispatched on a load to Northern Arkansas and even though he had little rest, he headed off under dispatch. During the run, he received a phone call from his brother-in-law who was on his way home, but his car broke down. The brother-in-law’s child, Andre’s nephew or neice, was dying. He asked Mr. Walls if he could give him a ride home. Andre did.
Andre completed the load to Arkansas, but was then called in to the company and was advised that he was terminated due to violating company policy. He was asked to write a statement explaining his side of the story, which he did. He was still terminated and with an “unauthorized passenger” on his DAC report, he has not been able to find another trucking company that will hire him.
Before the next morning, the baby died.
What would you have done?
This driver is now at the point of “losing everything.” I mention often that there are good and decent trucking companies. I know there are, because I’ve worked for several of them. Is there one trucking company out there that will prove me right? Will you give Andre Walls a job? Will you look past the fact that he had an “unauthorized passenger” in the truck? Will you understand that a baby was dying?
Help prove me right. If you’ll hire this driver, email me at : allen@truthabouttrucking.com and I’ll forward your email to Andre. I won’t post about it . . . I won’t talk about it . . . it will just be between you and this driver.
What would you have done? What if it had been your child?
Will you hire Andre? email me . . . and thanks.

DAC Petition hits 100+ Signatures – More Needed
Posted by Allen Smith in Politics, trucking, trucking companies on July 6th, 2009
Our petition to STOP False DAC Reporting has hit the 100+ signature mark. We appreciate all the support we have received thus far, but we are needing many more in order to build the strength behind the proposal to be submitted to Congress.
Consider emailing all your friends, relatives, etc., and ask for their support for this very important issue. We are receiving many emails daily from professional drivers, students just getting started in their driving careers … sharing their experiences concerning the abuse and false claims being placed on their DAC report by trucking companies.
DAC Services, Tulsa, Oklahoma – is now pulling more scams on drivers. I have recently received several emails from drivers who have requested their (once per year) free copy of their DAC report, and they never received it. When they called DAC Services, they were told that it was mailed and if they did not receive it, then it was not their fault, and if they wanted another one, they would have to pay the required $9.50
Let’s work to bring this abuse and these false claims to a stop. Drivers keep America moving and these people just do not care.
We are off to a great start . . . keep the signatures coming! Let all your friends know . . .
Thanks to all . . .

Petition to Stop False DAC Reporting
Posted by Allen Smith in Politics, trucking, trucking companies on July 2nd, 2009
We are preparing to submit a letter of proposal to the appropriate Senator(s) and Representatives of Congress concerning the false reports and accusations being placed on truck drivers’ DAC reports by the trucking companies who abuse this service.
The DAC Report has long been an avenue in which many trucking companies utilize in order to falsely accuse a driver for incidents or acts that never occurred. Countless professional drivers have experienced their careers ruined by the abusive system, even though the agency is regulated by The Fair Credit Reporting Act.
We are needing your help to assist in stopping false claims upon drivers and the change needed in order to bring about fair and justified reporting services as described per Federal law. We are asking for your signature to our petition to stop false DAC reporting.
Your signature is greatly appreciated and any comments you would like to add, will only strengthen our cause when the proposal is submitted.
Thanks for your support . . . together, we can STOP the abuse of false accusations on the truck drivers’ DAC.

The Highway Information Sharing Analysis Center, funded by the Department of Homeland Security, issued an advisory on Friday warning “drivers and trucking companies that they could be exposed to violence from Mexico’s drug wars.” The warning stated, “Truck drivers carry a risk as they are involved in operations that might interest these criminals,” adding that drivers should “maintain situational awareness at all times and be extremely conscious of your environment.”

Trucking Parking Shortage an Issue
Posted by Allen Smith in Politics, Safety, otr trucking, trucking, trucking life on March 9th, 2009
Professional driver, W. Thompson is clear to point out the serious problem concerning trucking parking shortage for the big rigs. Rest areas, truck stops and various parking lots across the country simply do not provide enough spaces for our professional truckers. As Mr. Thompson makes clear, it can be a big problem trying to find a parking spot in many areas, especially after 5:00 – 6:00 PM.
Recently, our Government performed a survey and concluded that there were plenty of parking spaces available for our truck drivers. I wonder who would really know best: the Government . . . or the drivers? On the other hand, a recent study by the Federal Highway Administration, reported that there will never be enough public rest areas to meet the needs of the professional truck driver. It also reported that in most states, the combination of private and public areas were sufficient to meet the demands.
Also, to make things worse, just today, March 9th, 2009 – The state of Virginia is considering closing all four rest areas along I-81.
What do you think? As a professional driver, is there enough parking spaces available for truckers? Where ever you are? Why do politicians, who have probably never even set foot in a big rig, believe that finding a place to park in an 18-wheeler is not a problem? Instead of looking at Government data, here is a suggestion for the political experts out there: go spend about 4 weeks in a semi and visit the real world!
As Mr. Thompson said to me, “I don’t know about you, but when I’m out there running it’s almost impossible to find a spot to shut down after 5 PM.”
Is the Government listening?
* Special thanks to Mr. Thompson for his contribution to this post.*
