The U. S. trucking industry has seen a serious rise of cargo theft over the past few years and the problem is growing rapidly.  So much in fact, that stealing truck freight is becoming the “signature crime of the early 21st century.”

The September, 2010 issue of Truckers News Magazine has taken an in-depth investigation into the growing and dangerous problem.  On September 1st, 2010 Truth About Trucking “LIVE” talk radio discussed, not only the problem . . . but the solutions to this ever-growing crime.

Our special guests were:

Military Law and Defending Lt. Michael Behenna

Behenna FamilyAs a follow up to our previous post, Trucking Veterans also Military Veterans, the injustice surrounding the incarceration of Army Ranger 1st Lt. Michael Behenna continues.    Al-Qaida terrorist, Ali Mansur, organized an attack which killed two U. S.  soldiers and injured two others.   Lt. Behenna and his platoon later captured Mansur.  While serving in Iraq and performing his military duties within a war zone, Lt. Behenna was ordered to transport Mansur back to his home and release him.

While transporting Mansur, under military orders, Mansur lunged for Behenna and Lt. Behenna shot him in self-defense.  An expert witness by the prosecutors corroborated Michael’s story, but the prosecutors never called the witness and failed to tell the defense team which is a direct violation of the Brady Material.   A highly regarded and well respected military officer among his peers, Lt. Behenna remains in prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and is serving a 15 year sentence.

Talk show personality, Michael Savage has come to Michael’s defense, donating $100,000 of his own money to help free this American Hero.   Learn what you can do to help by visiting the Defend Michael Behenna website.

Michael’s parents, Scott and Vicki Behenna have been working to get Michael a new trial.

Scott Behenna has a degree in Criminal Justice and worked for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) for 25 years.  The last four years at the OSBI, he worked on the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, retiring from the OSBI in 2007.  He later began a consulting position with the Department of Homeland Security.   In 2008, he was hired by the FBI as an Intelligence Analyst where he currently works on National Intelligence issues.

Vicki Behenna is a career federal prosecutor with 21 years of service.  She was one of the prosecutors responsible for the prosecution of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols concerning the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995.   She is one of the most well thought of and respected Federal prosecutors in the state of Oklahoma.

They continue their fight to defend their son’s honor against the military law that, instead of protecting the American soldier, sends them to prison while serving their country during a time of war.  Truth About Trucking “LIVE” talk radio looked at the case around Lt. Behenna and explains what you can do to help free Lt. Behenna.

Barry Szczucki and Allen SmithRecently, I was talking to another driver and the topic of politics came up.  I was quite amazed at his knowledge and expertise on this confusing and frustrating topic.  During the conversation, he made the comment, “Well, I’m just a dumb truck driver.” We both laughed and I knew that he was just making a general statement and that there was no truth to it, but many times, truckers will make this off-the-cuff comment.   The fact is, professional truck drivers are far from being “dumb.”

Furthermore, many truck drivers have a wide range of interests that reaches far outside of the trucking realm.  Authors, musicians, song writers, stand up comedy, voice impersonators . . . the list is endless.  American truckers consist of a vast array of skill and talent where trucking plays no part in their lives.   With the onslaught of social media, these road warriors are sharing their other expertise and knowledge with those who have the same interests.   Truck driver, Barry Szczucki, is one of them.

A 35 year driving veteran, Barry Szczucki has become an expert in a field that consists of hundreds of millions of followers:  organic gardening.  A walking encyclopedia, Barry created the website:  Rely on Yourself . . . providing information on how to grow an organic garden resulting in what he calls, “Super Foods.” Vegetables consisting of all the minerals and vitamins the human body needs, totally absent of pesticides and insecticides.  Also, by producing your own super foods, Barry points out that one can save between $200 and $300 per month, keeping that hard earned money in the bank.

Providing information on such areas as:  cottonseed meal, bone meal, gypsum, rock phosphate, kelp meal, rock dust and even fish emulsion . . . Barry Szczucki blows the competition away when it comes to vegetable gardening . . . all from a professional truck driver.   I once asked Barry a simple question regarding the proper planting of eggplant . . . what I received was a two hour learning session on the ancient gardening techniques of the Mayan Indians.   Like I said . . . a walking encyclopedia.

Due to the overwhelming response he has received from his website, Mr. Szczucki is now launching his own talk radio show on the largest talk show media in the world:  Blog Talk Radio.   Self Reliance Radio will begin broadcasting this month, April, 2010.

For long haul truckers, growing your own organic vegetable garden would prove impossible, but if your spouse at home enjoys this past time, and you are looking for ways to save money . . . then Self Reliance Radio will explain exactly what you need to know to grow unbelievable vegetables right in your own back yard . . . no matter where you live . . . even if it is in the Florida sand:

Truck drivers sharing a wealth of information, knowledge and expertise through social media.   Catch trucker, Barry Szczucki . . . only on:

Earlier this evening our BTR show, Truth About Trucking “LIVE” aired a 90 minute show discussing the Dan Rather interview with TruckerDesiree.   Thanks to the callers and listeners and those in the chat room for tuning in . . . show has already been downloaded nearly 100 times within 1.25 hours.

I had some phone trouble during the last 5 minutes of the show and lost all connection, so was unable to “close” it out like I normally do, but the show focused on Desiree’s story and the real purpose of exposing these scams, lies and deceit within certain segments of the trucking industry.

Truth About Trucking has been working to expose these issues for nearly 5 years now, and with TruckerDesiree exposing a further hidden “secret” of the OTR industry . . . the industry is taking notice.  Change for the better can happen.

I have nothing to gain from exposing these lies and scams of the over the road industry.  They have been going on for years and the time has finally come that these issues are becoming known . . . CDL students and new drivers have the RIGHT TO KNOW . . . and for those trucking companies and CDL schools who participate in these scams and abuses . . . we will continue to expose them until they are changed and all drivers . . . students, new drivers and veteran drivers alike . . . receive the respect and honesty that they deserve.

NAFTA Could Cost Drivers Two Million More Jobs

Opening Mexico’s border under the NAFTA agreement could cost professional truck drivers in the U. S. as many as two million jobs.  With an estimated four million active U. S. truck drivers, that would equal cutting half of the work force.  With an industry that already uses new student and CDL drivers for cheap labor to haul the cheap freight, should the Mexican border be opened completely would be devastating to the United States truckers’ vocation.

Workplace harassmentWith the recent news touching on bullying and harassment within the workplace, trucking talk radio – Truth About Trucking “LIVE” aired a 2 hour show last evening discussing these very issues.   Guests were  JB Shaffner, Desiree Wood, Damien and special guest Yancy Thomas.

Bringing in a record listening audience, the show proved to be an eye opener for many as the purpose was to discuss these issues within the trucking industry, as well as to find solutions for the problem.

Bullying and harassment within the workplace has become a very serious issue and we will continue to broadcast future shows in order to help bring this matter out more into the main stream media.

The next show: Dealing with Workplace Harassment - will air live on Monday, June 29th, 2009 at 7 PM EST.

What can you do if ever faced with an abusive situation at your workplace?   What steps can you take to protect your rights as an employee and to insure that the correct procedures are followed so action is taken against the abuser?   Just because trucking is far different than the average workplace, you still have rights and you do not have to accept any abuse or harassment by the trucking company, trainer or anyone else within the industry.  How to deal with workplace harassment … Allen continues the discussion …
