Dan Rather Reports:  Queen of the Road

Also Available on iTunes as a download:  Listen from your computer

Join Dan Rather from  Dan Rather Reports as he interviews our dear friend and fellow trucking advocate and activist TruckerDesiree. The theme of the show will be the inadequate CDL schools and the exploiting of new CDL drivers and trainees.

Almost 10 years ago my better half, Allen Smith ,wrote the book “The Truth About Trucking”, advising people on the correct paths to take and those avenues to avoid, specifically CDL school mills and trucking companies.  The motive?  To help folks achieve success within trucking and to prepare them for the lifestyle they would be facing.

Allen literally has received thousands of emails from people, but none so memorable as the one in September of 2008  from a new  CDL driver who had just gone through the mill……CDL Mill if you will.  The name of that Student?  Desiree Wood, affectionately known today as TruckerDesiree.

Desiree had written Allen and I numerous times, asking questions about trucking ( as so many do).  She had just been through some of the most difficult and stressful experiences during her CDL school training and her CDL company team driver training…and her descriptions were quite vivid and graphic!  She would write us long detailed emails describing her encounters…some of them making me cringe.  I finally asked her if she would like to share her experiences with our Blog readers and Newsletter subscribers.  She said yes she would and thus A Day in the Life of a Lady Trucker” and TruckerDesiree was born, and the trucking industry would never be quite  the same!

Well, it’s exactly one year today that TruckerDesiree made her debut in “AskTheTrucker” with the  first post in her journal, ” A Day in the Life of a Lady Trucker”.

A lot has happened since then for Desiree;  Talk Radio Shows, Trucking Magazine interviews,  documentaries, spokesperson for the iPhone Trucker App, blogger, twitter queen, facebook diva, and most of all a very good friend and advocate for truckers … She’s made a lot of friends and many enemies (goes along with popularity)  By far her interview with Dan Rather will be her biggest accomplishment to date, but we expect to see even more achievements in the future.

We’re so Proud of you Desiree!! You Give a new meaning to Women in Trucking

How CDL Students Can Increase Their Chances for Hire

Everyday we hear or read about the lack of jobs for truck drivers, especially for the new CDL student just coming on board.  Although things have gotten a little tighter, the truth of the matter is . . . there are truck driving jobs available, and many trucking companies are hiring.  This fact comes from one of the best truck driving schools in the country - Eagle Training Services, Inc. out of Illinois.  In fact, Eagle Training is doing so well at not only training new CDL students, but finding them jobs once their training is complete.   In fact, today, September 1st, 2009, Eagle is celebrating their new move-in to their new location at R.L. Leek’s Building, 2210 Harrison Avenue, Rockford, Illinois.   The new facility was needed due to the increase they are experiencing with their class sizes.

The main factor I see with recent CDL grads unable to land that driving job, is that they had some kind of negative mark on their MVR or something to this affect, and the school took them in anyway, knowing they would not be hireable.   Eagle Training is showing a job placement rate within the mid to high 90 percentile rate.  Other excellent CDL schools are reporting the same stats.  The importance of choosing the right CDL training school goes without saying . . . the school you choose can make you or break you in your truck driving career.

Tanya Bons of Eagle Training provides valuable information about what CDL students can do to increase their chances for getting hired.   She also gives an excellent insight into why so many believe that truck driving jobs are scarce and hard to find.   In today’s market, Tanya explains that trucking companies are seeking the cream of the crop.   She also discusses why we have been led to believe that trucking jobs are falling by the way side, and why unemployment offices are seeing such a high rate of out-of-work truck drivers.  It is a great article that you should be sure to read:

Only Cream at the Truck Stops – Truck Driving Jobs in 2009

The economy will eventually turn around for all aspects of industry.  Furthermore, as Tanya explains, when that happens . . . trucking is going to come back stronger than before.

There are those truck driving training schools that will use one technique that will insure a new drivers’ failure at a driving career every time:

Another email from a CDL graduate with the same story:

“Just because my teacher at XXXX Training School told me not to put my DUI on my application because the DUI was over 5 years old, they fired me because I did not put it down.  I was out on the road with my trainer for a week and they red flagged me and then fired me.  I can’t seem to get any trucking company to even look at me now.”

When I receive emails like this one, and I get a lot of them, it simply makes my blood boil.  As author of the first and original, Truth About Trucking, I want to reiterate the TRUTH about what some truck driving schools will do that will end your truck driving career before it even has a chance to begin.  It’s not like I haven’t already made this SCAM known, but it’s time to let it be known again.

It is true that trucking companies will normally do a back-ground check for the past 5-7 years.  The above email was sent to me by a new driver that had experienced a DUI back in 1996.  So, here’s the truth AGAIN:

The trucking company means absolutely NOTHING when it comes to the completed hiring process.  The ultimate decision will nearly always come from the insurance carrier.   The employment application will always ask the question in similar form such as, Have you ever been….?” or “Have you ever had a…?” or “Have you ever been convicted of…?” and so forth.  The key word here is:  “EVER“.

If the question is, “Have you ever been convicted of a DUI?” -  then it means “ever.”  Even if the DUI was 75 years ago, ever means ever.  By not putting it down on the application constitutes “falsifying a Commercial Motor Vehicle Application” which is a very serious offense.   State and Federal Laws are very clear about this matter:

“Any person who falsifies any information in an application or test for a commercial driver’s license shall not be licensed to operate a commercial motor vehicle, or the person’s commercial driver’s license shall be canceled, for a period of one year after the director discovers such falsification.”

These truck driving school instructors, recruiters and driver trainers know this.  By telling you not to write it down on the application because they only go back several years, is nothing but a lie and a scam.  The school still keeps your money and you could very well be in a situation where you may never find work as a truck driver.  At the minimum, you will be out of luck for at least one year.  Then, after one year has passed, you will be required to go through CDL training all over again, and yes, you will have to pay for it once more.

Because you may have driven for one or two weeks before the insurance carrier caught it, the trucking company will then turn around and place a “falsifying” report on your DAC.   All future employers will see this report and thus, the reason for not accepting you within a driving position.  Also, the HireRight DAC Trucking Solutions, who oversees the DAC report, could care less about the truth.  You have the right to place your side of the story on your DAC and try to have it removed through the use of an attorney, but this can be very time consuming and costly.

REMEMBER:  When a recruiter or truck driving school official or driver trainer tells you not to worry about writing down a violation that occurred over 5-7 years ago … they are either lying or they are just ignorant.  It is a SCAM!

Doing so, will end your driving career and landing another truck driving job could take a very long time.

ALWAYS list EVERYTHING down on the Commercial Motor Vehicle Application no matter what the offense and no matter how long ago it was.

Allen Smith

CDL Training

Becoming a professional truck driver is one of the most demanding jobs and lifestyles that one can imagine, and yet there are over 4 million drivers. So what motivates someone to become a professional driver? There are many reasons, but here’s a few:

freedom, independence, desire to change careers, wanting to see the country, and even to just get out of the rat race of society.

Whatever the reason, the fact remains that before you can drive 80,000 pounds safely down a highway, sharing the road with countless other people, you must first learn how to drive these massive vehicles properly.

Your CDL training is THE most important decision you will make. Deciding upon the proper school could be the deciding factor of whether you will be successful or not.

Many within the trucking industry are anticipating a “driver shortage”  which will open the flood gates to massive amounts of new students seeking to obtain their CDL. Many are predicting that with the anticipation of CSA 2010 many drivers  will lose their jobs, for either being considered unsafe drivers or for “other” reasons  given to them by their present employers ( what I would call excuses justified by CSA 2010)

Whatever the case, we can expect many new students to be entering the trucking industry, desiring to be  a professional driver. Because of this I believe there will be less than adequate training ( even more so than before) available and more than ever YOU must do your homework and research thoroughly before you decide upon a truck driving school.

I’ve  been writing information for CDL Students and new Truck Drivers for quite some time now. I am proud to say that the information has saved many a trucking career seeker, student, and new driver from the devastation that can occur within the first few years.  In addition to saving years of wasted time and heartache, the info I share has directed thousands towards a successful trucking career by issuing the guidance and knowledge that most drivers only learn from years of experience.

I’ve  written hundreds of posts and articles in order to help you succeed within the trucking industry. This information is readily available to you FREE as it has been submitted to article directories and on this blog, thus being accessible throughout the internet.

I have combined this information in books, Audio CD’s, and PDF CD’s so that the reader/listener could have the info without searching, thus saving  time.

Please, before you make the decision about becoming a professional driver, take your time and understand what the job entails, including the lifestyle you will be expected to maintain. I have tried to be very honest and upfront and have sugar coated nothing.

You must know that what will be promised to you and what you will experience are going to be very different. Your training will not end upon the completion of your schooling, but rather it actually just really begins at that point. This is where the choice of the best starter companies come to play.  At this point you will begin to understand how trucking really works:

The training process, your responsibilities, the salary, home time, how you will be treated as an employee….in other words, the reality of your new career. To be quite candid, many will not be able to endure and will not make it. For those who do, much will depend on:

A) the school you choose and the company you work for

B) Your attitude and how much you desire to succeed in the industry.

For Everyone who has been anxiously awaiting for Allen Smith’s revised edition of “The Truth About Trucking”, we invite you to read what one of our clients had to say about the new revision.

Her name is Barbara, and we asked her if we could send it to her before the launch date of next week( October 13th) so she could write a critique.

We asked Barbara to really be Honest and Critical and not to spare feelings. She so kindly accepted our request. This is was she so graciously wrote:

“I think the first word out of my mouth after reading this book is “WOW”. This is an
incredible book. Allen must have put a lot of work into this book.
I really appreciate all the new information that have been added to the new book like:
1. The Easy Trucking software
2. The chapter on “Team Truck Driving”. That chapter particularly opened my eyes.
3. The new chapter on “Women In Trucking”. WOW. Who would believe such things go on
in the trucking business.
4. Bonus chapter 13 is something I will definitely look into.
5. The Fun Stuff chapter and
6. Internet Marketing.

This is a lot of incredible information you have put into the book. I really, really
appreciate Allen taking the time and the effort to write this book.”…….Barbara

Thank You Barbara for taking the time to do this for us!

We hope others will add to this AskTheTrucker blog post when they receive the new revised addition with the three additional chapters. We’d like to know what “your critique” is also.

As always, Allen has really put his heart in this new revised version and hopes to prevent any hardships that truckers might otherwise face without it. Truck driving schools are plentiful through out the United States.  Some good….some bad.  We’ve all heard the stories from students and new drivers revealing their experiences with some of the not-so-good schools.  In any industry, there will always be those businesses’ that bring about sour feelings onto the other “good” businesses’.  Those companies that are doing a good and honest job are also hurt by these “bad apples.”

As a student, how do you know the school is what it says it is?  How can you be sure you are going to receive the training you need in order to be a professional, safe driver?  What seperates a “good” school from a “great” school?  What questions should you ask and what should you look for in choosing a truck driving school?

Ken Bons is founder of Eagle Training Services, Inc. out of Illinois.  He and his staff have built Eagle Training Services into one of the best and most highly regarded truck driving schools in the nation.  How?  What does he do differently from the others?

Truth About Trucking is on a mission to find such schools and companies. . . another way of “helping” students and new drivers.  Are you considering a career in trucking?  Are you looking for a truck driving school that you can believe in and trust?

Ken Bons will be my special guest on our internet talk radio show, Truth About Trucking “LIVE” – Monday, September 15th, 2008 at 7:00 P.M, Eastern Standard Time.  Be sure to tune in and learn exactly what to look for when choosing a CDL school.  But, do more than just listen…CALL IN!

Ken Bons will be glad to take your questions and give you the answers you’re looking for when considering a career in trucking or choosing the right truck driving school.  This is a MUST show for students and “newbies.”   Brought to you by Truth About Trucking “LIVE.”

Driving With Blinders On

Years ago, while I was working in the oilfields of Oklahoma, I decided to start another business. Since trucking was in my blood, I chose to open a hot shot service. Though there was “talk” about an oilfield crunch, I estimated that I could still have a viable business for the next three to four years. There were several very successful hot shot services in the town, and plenty of room for one more. I purchased a nice dually with a trailer, capable of pulling 16,000 pounds. After establishing all the required business red tape, my newly formed hot shot business was up and running. For the first several weeks I was nearly worn to exhaustion by the constant need of pipeline, fittings and various oilfield supplies. However, it was a “good” exhaustion, even though like many in the oilfield, it was keeping me running seven days per week.

In my fourth month with the business, suddenly things changed. In 1982, President Reagan was talking about something called “Deregulation.” Two weeks later, the oil boom of Elk City, Oklahoma had literally disappeared. Oil rigs that had darted the horizon were gone. The big oilfield money was gone. I had gone from making a very large amount of monthly income to a “new” job that only paid $740.00 per month! Needless to say, things were bad. But, who or what was at fault? Looking back, all the signs were there. Eventually, I was able to come to terms with what actually had gone wrong . . . I had been driving with blinders on.

There are always two sides to a story. Several people around town had voiced their opinions about this as “not being a good time” to start an oilfield business. My banker had asked me, “Are you sure you want to do this?” A close friend who owned a hot shot service at the time, casually stated, “Just be careful.” On the other hand, there were those business owners who could not stop talking about how great things were. They were always there to tell you their success stories. There were even those who could not stop talking about how their business just kept growing and they were expanding! I took all of this information in, but I never really processed it. Why? Because I had made up my mind that I was going to start a hot shot service, and that was all there was to it!

Today, I relate this story to the trucking industry. As in any industry, there will always be those who are doing well. If everybody failed at an industry, there would be no such industry. For one driver to tell a “newbie” to trucking that there is big money to be made in OTR driving, only because he or she is successful, is very misleading. For 500 drivers to tell a “newbie” to trucking the same thing, is also misleading. How can that be? Because there are eight million CDL drivers in the United States today . . . will all eight million tell you the same thing? “Success” stories can always be found in any industry, does that tell the entire story about that industry? Are you hearing the “other side” of the story?

For my hot shot service, I chose to “listen” to the success stories, and decided to ignore the “failures.” Within the trucking industry, there is a 128% driver turn over rate with the OTR companies. This clearly shows that for every one “success” story, there are 128 “dissatisfied” stories. I want to reiterate my belief that you can make a decent living with over the road trucking . . . there are those making a very good living at it, and yes, there are success stories. However, you MUST keep in mind that there are MANY others who are not successful when they first start out.. You have to know the entire picture . . . you have to hear both sides of the story . . . any story. It is the only way you will be able to come through with a clear and accurate decision process when choosing schools and jobs.

For those who want to let their success stories be known, they fail to understand that by only giving their “good” side of the story, they could be leading you down a road that you do not want to travel. What works for one person, does not mean it will work for everyone. By having both sides of the issue out in the open, it can only help in making the right choice. Take for example, these trucking companies that experience a high turn over rate. Why? Do you think that maybe there is something wrong with them? If there was nobody willing to give the “other side” of the story, what would ever change? If students and new drivers are aware of any scams and lies practiced by a company, this will bring about two things:

1. The student or new driver will not bother applying for a job at that particular company . . . and

2. The trucking company will either go out of business or better yet . . . CHANGE!

Would it not be best to bring about “change” to these companies and schools which would benefit all drivers? Or should we all remain silent and pretend that all is well within the entire trucking industry? The problem lies with people who take every “negative” thought, opinion or comment to mean that ALL companies and schools are “BAD.” They are still missing the picture . . . they are missing the message. That message is to provide the entire truth about the trucking industry . . . the OTR industry. All one has to do is check the trucking forums on the internet. Sure, you will find “success” stories . . . but DO NOT overlook the thousands of “negative” stories. They are not negative . . . they are truth . . . they are the “other side” of the story! Many of them do eventually make it all work, but not until they’ve had to learn some rough lessons, which could have been avoided.

If all drivers just sat back and never said anything “bad” about trucking, then thousands of students and new drivers will come into the industry expecting success at ANY company or school. How is that helping? But, by voicing the truth about the problems drivers face on the road, with their particular carrier, with the truck driving school they attended, and so forth, things can change. Those companies who abuse drivers by adding false information on their DAC report . . . those companies that promise .34 CPM and then only pay .24 CPM . . . those companies that say you will be home every weekend, but you’re out for three weeks on your first run . . . those schools that give a price of $3500, and then in the end hands you a bill for $7000 . . . those schools that promise guaranteed employment, and then fail to deliver . . . all of this can change. If both sides of the story are known, it can force change by exposing wrongful tactics and practices.

We can all sit around and “talk” and complain about the poor practices within OTR driving . . . we can all lean back and tell a “newbie” that, “Yea! Trucking is great!” …..or . . . we can all send a message to those companies and schools that practice poor policies “that we are going to educate newcomers to the industry” . . . we are going to tell them the good side of trucking AND the bad side of trucking . . . we can all let these students and new drivers know what to look out for and which companies and schools have a great reputation and those that have a terrible reputation. Hopefully, they will take notice and either change their ways or we will close them down.

Or . . . we can keep driving with blinders on.

 Allen Smith
